मार्कंडेय जी के बारे में कहा जाता है कि जब मार्कंडेय ऋषि पैदा हुए थे तो उन्हें आयु दोष था। उनके पिता ऋषि मृकण्ड को ज्योतिषियों ने बताया कि बालक की आयु कम है। यह सुनकर मार्कंडेय के माता-पिता चिंतित हो गए।
इसके बाद ब्राह्मणों की सलाह पर मार्कंडेय के माता-पिता ने गंगा गोमती संगम तट पर बालू से शिव की मूर्ति बनाकर उपासना में लीन हो गये। जब मार्कण्डेय की उम्र पूरी होने पर यमराज उन्हें लेने आए तो अपने माता-पिता के साथ मार्कंडेय भी शिव जी की अराधना में लीन थे।
