The current wave of strikes is the largest in more than a decade, but it's nowhere near the heights reached in the UK during the 1970s. September 1979 saw more than 11 million working days lost due to strike action. The latest figures for November 2022 show 467,000 days lost.
A rapid increase in personal debt has been a major factor suppressing industrial action over the last four decades. The decline of social housing & deregulation of the financial system in most OECD countries has encouraged workers to borrow heavily. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

Quick thread on industrial action & the call for a #GeneralStrike to try & set out the limits of this & what might work better
when workers go on strike they are usually in breach of their contract of employment/contract for services

But there are specific statutory immunities that mean workers can take industrial action without being sued for breach of contract and other stuff. Because this is 🇬🇧, these statutory immunities have restrictions around how ballots etc must be conducted, notice to employers etc
The big one in terms of a #GeneralStrike is that for the statutory immunities to apply there must be a trade dispute, and the action must be called in connection with the trade dispute
For decades the working class have been told, because of the FPTP system, they need to compromise to get the Tories out, for decades they've been betrayed by so-called Liberal allies in suits, who've promised much, & delivered little. 1/21

Here's why worker wages haven't increased as quickly as CEO compensation: high unemployment (which forces workers into accepting the lowest wages possible), globalization (which allows companies to find the cheapest workers in the world), the erosion of unions>
(which makes it harder for workers to collectively bargain), low labor standards (incl low min wage), increase in non-compete clauses (which makes it hard for workers to find better wages in their industry) and domestic outsourcing (like shifting to a workforce of freelancers)
BEWARE: 55 Tufton Street! (Civitas) has produced a report saying the UK has the most expensive & 2nd worse health system after the US BUT Tufton St Civitas admits they've included COVID expenditure, Test, Trace & Isolate in their calculations (without saying it's £37 BILLION!)
